Research Project

After our discussion last week about issues that our middle school kids deal with I would like to start a our school improvement project.  Our high school is not immune from the same problems that face the middle school.  As a class we will brainstorm ideas of some of the problems that kids deal with in school.

BRAINSTORM

From the ideas above, chose one that interests you or something you feel strongly about.  Everyone in class will have a different topic.  You will show your understanding of this topic in the following ways:
·      5 page research paper
·      Power Point or Keynote presentation
·      Public service announcement

Research Paper- 1800-2000 words
The research paper should inform and answer questions about your topic.  Think about who, what, when, where, why, and how of your issue.  Include information that tells the class what the problem is and who it affects, specifically.  I would like some statistics or facts that illustrate the importance of the issue.  Additionally I would like you to tell us about some potential solutions that could be implemented in our schools on Kodiak.  Analyze the pros and cons of the solutions.  The research paper will be where you site all of your sources.  You must have at least three different sources one of which may not be electronic.  Please use APA style for in text citations as well as the works cited page.

Power Point/ Keynote
This presentation is intended to educate the class about your topic.  It should be an extension of your research paper.  Your presentation should be an instructional aid, meaning a visual reference for you as you speak to the class, not a hastily put together plagiarized monstrosity.

Public Service Announcement
The PSA is a flyer you will make to post electronically, and print off and post around our schools.  Think about a powerful visual that will catch the viewer’s eye, a slogan or phrase that will convey your message and make it unforgettable.
